چکیده

Crystal lattice parameters of a nonstoichiometric and a stoichiometric sample of the intermediatevalent compound TmSe have been measured as a function of temperature by x-ray and neutron diffraction techniques. The thermal expansion behavior of the stoichiometric sample is consistent with this material showing temporal valence Auctuations. The behavior of the nonstoichiometric sample differs from the first, particularly at low temperatures where we have observed an unexpected Schottky anomaly in the thermal expansion. This anomaly may be explained in terms of the random Tm-site vacancies in the lattice which can cause a preferential freezing of Tm'+ ions at some sites and Tm + ions at other sites hindering the process of on-site valence fiuctuations.

The Association between the Urinary Excretion of Trimethylselenonium and Trimethylsulfonium in Humans

Hydrogen sulfide is a signaling molecule that plays important roles in several physiological processes, and its methylation product trimethylsulfonium (TMS) is a natural constituent of human urine that could serve as a biomarker for hydrogen sulfide. In vitro studies showed that the enzyme indole-ethylamine N-methyltransferase (INMT) is responsible for the production of trimethylsulfonium as we...

Relationship Between Phonons and Thermal Expansion in Zn(CN)2 and Ni(CN)2 from Inelastic Neutron Scattering and Ab-Initio Calculations

Zn(CN)2 and Ni(CN)2 are known for exhibiting anomalous thermal expansion over a wide temperature range. The volume thermal expansion coefficient for the cubic, three dimensionally connected material, Zn(CN)2, is negative (αV = -51 × 10 -6 K) while for Ni(CN)2, a tetragonal material, the thermal expansion coefficient is negative in the two dimensionally connected sheets (αa=-7 × 10 -6 K), but th...

Fiber - Optic Sensing of Linear Thermal Expansion (RESEARCH NOTES)

The use of a LED fiber-optic sensor to measure displacement and linear thermal expansion is described. It has a sensitivity of about 0.6 mV/mm, a resolution of 1.25 mm, and a dynamic rang of 400 mm for displacement measurements. For thermal expansion, it shows a sensitivity of about 3.5 mV/C, and the experimental linear expansion values are in agreement with those calculated. The reported senso...

Invar effect in Pu-Ga alloys

We show that the anomalous thermal expansion behavior of Pu-Ga alloys can be explained by an invar effect, which is modeled by assuming the thermal transfer of Pu atoms from a lower-energy, higher-volume δ1 state to a higher-energy, lowervolume δ2 state. From a fit to the available neutron diffraction data on the lattice constants of Pu-Ga alloys, the energy separation of these states is found ...
